Severn Covenant's Leadership The overseers of Severn Covenant Church (SCC) have been helping people find their way to Christ for over 30 years. Their mission is to equip the Saints to grow spiritually and spread the word of God. Among Christians, those who preside over assemblies are Elders. The Greek word for elder is “presbuteros”. It is mentioned at least 69 times in the New Testament. The word refers to age, rank, senior, and forefathers. The qualifications for an Elder are found in 1 Tim.3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. The primary functions of an Elder are found in 1 Peter 5:1-3: be shepherds of God’s flock, serving as overseers, eager to serve, and being examples to the flock. We see the first old testament example of Elders in Exodus 18:24-26 which is often referred to as the Jethro rule after Mose’s father in-law.
